Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our project was created with the objective of a team of Austronauts to go to the moon, and through there produce energy to be able to live there, also exploring the moon itself and its irregularities.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

We decided to choose the south pole of the moon to build our lunar base because it is the “land” of extreme light, the south pole is also a good target for a future human landing because, robotically, it is the most extensively investigated region of the Moon.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

We plan to build habitats on the moon with several 3D printers (high investment), joining the local materials of the moon such as the lunar regolith to build bricks among other various objects, making houses in modules for different residents with connections of the same material so that there can be circulation between people.

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

Thanks to the lava tube explosions that occurred millions of years ago, lava was expelled out of the moon’s nucleus, resulting in tunnels. As some of these tubes are about 300 meters wide, but only 40 meters deep, it is ideal for us to be protected against the harsh climate of the space.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

As we are at the south pole it is easier to store water thanks to the craters made by the light that reaches the surface. As areas with pieces of ice and the energy from solar panels were discovered, we used light to melt the ice, leaving it in a liquid state.

One of the ways we arranged was to plant Hydroponic Plants. Hydroponic plants are plants without the use of soil, with roots submerged in water. From plants we produce food.

The energy of our lunar base comes from our solar panels, which are on the outside of our base absorbing the energy transmitted by the sun.

To produce oxygen we will do the water electrolysis. Water electrolysis is the decomposition of water into oxygen and hydrogen due to the passage of an electric current through water. A source of electrical energy is connected to two electrodes that are placed in the water. If everything is correctly assembled, hydrogen is generated at the cathode and oxygen at the anode. It takes a huge amount of energy to electrolyze pure water as it is not a good electrical conductor. Without excess energy, the electrolysis of pure water occurs very slowly.

Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp (for example: commercial, scientific, and/or tourist purposes).

The main objective of the Lunar Camp is to give astronauts the best possible conditions. Astronauts do scientific experiments, so that we can improve the qualities on the Moon.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

At the beginning of the day, we started by electrolyzing the water to produce as much oxygen as possible. Then, our astronauts crew will pick up any pieces of ice they can find around our lunar base. Then, we put the pieces of ice that we found inside a capsule, and with the help of a strong light, we melt those pieces. While the pieces of ice are melting, we will have our first meal of the day. During the rest of the day, we do scientific investigations about new things that we find on the Moon. After a few hours, it’s time for dinner. However, before going to bed for the next day, we communicate with Earth, to give all the information we acquired during that day.
