Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2021-2022

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Diana is the moon camp calculated for four astronauts. It provides long-term travel for astronauts to the moon. The Camp will be built on the south polar crater Tycho.

The construction of the camp will require several flights from the Earth to the Moon to transport building materials and inventory.

The camp consists of one main center and three connected departments. Under the soil of the moon will be the main habitat of astronauts.  To study the moon scientifically, we will use rovers that were pre-made on earth. With the help of antennas we will communicate with the earth.

2.1 Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

We decided to build our moon camp on the south polar crater Tycho, because the crater provides camp with safety from fallen meteors. Other than that, the South polar crater is the most illuminated place on the moon, that provides us with more energy, rather than what we get from the dark part of the moon. Also this illuminated place will be more convenient, because they wouldn’t need to use more energy for lighting. On the south polar crater we come across frozen water reservoirs. This will help astronauts to have access to water supply easily and with help of that they will save time. With all that, the South polar landscape is convenient for plant growth.

2.2 How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques, materials and your design choices.

The most important material that we used while building the moon camp was iron. This material will be obtained from the moon ground. On the other hand we will take other building materials from the earth. Half of the camp will be accommodated in the ground of the moon’s surface. The camp will have several floors and they will include the following areas: warehouse, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, working place, gym, greenhouse and a laboratory. The floors will be connected to each other not only by the stairs, but also by an elevator. The warehouse will own a rail-track and it will make transportation of the loads much easier. Each part of the camp is connected to the center. The runway comes out from the center, which is considered to be the way to leave the place in case of an emergency. An air filter is also installed on the area of the camp which is controlling and regulating the amount of oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen.

2.3 The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them. (maximum 150 words)

Moon camp for astronauts is very dangerous and our camp will provide their safety. Specifically, the material that we are gonna use to build the moon camp will be iron. If meteor falls, iron construction will be solid, tough and will not get destroyed and for protection, from radiation and small particles, we will use ,,moon regolith”. if it’s used right, it’s tougher than concrete. Lead is also good material against Radiation, We can also use lead panels to protect our base. If something unusual is noticed, an automatic alarm device will turn on and notify crew about possible danger. If the situation is critical, crew members will be evacuated shortly and they will leave the moon as soon as possible.

2.4 Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:

Water
Food
Power
Air

Firstly, the astronauts will be provided with the water which was supplied from the earth. After building the camp, we will start to obtain the water from dark areas of the South Polar Crates, because water is proliferated as ice around the darker areas. The obtained water will be filtered in the laboratory and will be used not only as a fuel, but also to drink and use it as a hygienic material.

First of all, astronauts will be supplied with food which was taken from the earth. We are taking food which is not easily perishable, for example: honey, cheese, sugar, rice, oats, buckwheat, pasta and dried fruits. This type of food will help the astronauts to stay healthy. Besides, we will also take the frozen products because they will contain water too. And for mental healthiness, we will take food full of hydrocarbons, for example chocolate. We plan to take the ground which is full of fertilizer and using this we will plant potatoes, haricot beans, wheat grains and corn. They will grow very soon, become fruitful and produce a big amount of oxygen.

At first, we will take a certain amount of the energy with us and this will help different gadgets to light up and start working. Our camp will be built near South Polar Crates. This area is always bright and we will always be able to obtain energy using the sun panels. However, this will not be the only source of the energy. You can manufacture heat from taking apart the radioactive isotopes of the Uranium, Kalium and Thorium. From this heat we can get the geothermal energy which we can keep aside and use only for emergencies.

At first, astronauts will be supplied with the oxygen which was taken from the earth. Afterwards, the stock of the oxygen will be filled with the help of the plants. Because of this, we decided to cultivate the plant pothos, which is also called the devil’s ivy. This plant is able to produce the most amount of oxygen among the other plants. Besides, the stock of oxygen will be filled after producing it from a regolith.
The water: Firstly, the astronauts will be provided with the water which was supplied from the earth. After building the camp, we will start to obtain the water from dark areas of the South Polar Crates, because water is proliferated as ice around the darker areas. The obtained water will be filtered in the laboratory and will be used not only as a fuel, but also to drink and use it as a hygienic material.

2.5 Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp.

Mission of our camp will be scientific , to find out whether it is possible to assimilate the territory of the moon or not. Special attention will be paid to the ecosystem stability of the moon camp, to study the soil of the moon, to the extraction of minerals and ice. For all this our moon camp laboratory will be equipped with special machines.

3.1 Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

Living on the moon is not easy at all. Despite this, our completely armed group of astronauts and hyper-modern, highly functional and the best equipped camp is ready to conquer the moon! Of course a day on the moon is severely different from the day on earth. The first thing that astronauts do on a daily basis is that they contact the earth. Right after getting the instructions from the earth, astronauts are ready to start their daily missions, which are exploring the moon. Astronauts will get directions. They head to the kitchen and have a healthy breakfast to keep energized throughout the day. After breakfast, they take different fitness procedures to not weaken and stay in shape. Everything that we mentioned above will occur before 9 am according to the earth time. The next part of the day will continue as they separate and start taking care of the plants in the greenhouse, learn the terrain on the moon or stay in the camping area and analyze all the received information. Around 11 am the astronauts will get back to the camping place again they will divide into groups. The first group will stay in the laboratory and continue to work on obtaining the water and the oxygen. Then the following group will continue the work which will happen around 13:00. The second group will keep the exploring process while others are taking rest. The general dinner will start at 15:00 and the food will most likely contain the vegetables to keep the astronauts energized. The third group starts their work at 17:00 while others are resting. In case of any kind of emergency there always is one extra astronaut to help out others. Astronauts also have to check the gadgets all the time to see if they work properly or not. At the end of the day there always is one astronaut who will inform the leader of the expedition who is on the earth about their progress. Astronauts will enjoy their supper at 19:00 and afterwards some of them will continue to study the documents which were collected throughout the day. Others will take a look at plants in the greenhouse. 21:00 is the time when the final checking is starting. After that, astronauts will have their fitness course, have something to eat, have fun and spend their free time however they want to. Our unique camp will provide them with everything they need. And finally, at 22:00 all the astronauts will head to their sleeping areas after a really hard working and tiring day. All of them will start to rest and wait for their next unique adventure on the moon.
